Here we are, and the end of RPG a Day 2017! It’s been my first time participating in the challenge and it’s been a fun time. Some of the questions were nice and thought-provoking, and all of them were at least a good exercise. Onward to the responses!

Day 29: What has been the best-run RPG Kickstarter you have backed?

I’ve got to give props to Pinnacle, who always has gorgeous and tightly-run Kickstarters. I was nervous about how they’d handle a campaign as successful as Savage Rifts (especially when they ran separate campaigns before they were 100% fulfilled with Rifts), but they did so with aplomb.

Instead though, I want to focus on a publisher I’ve admired for a while now. Ben Dutter’s Sigil Stone Publishing has a lot to teach people about how to run a Kickstarter. I’ve backed three of their projects so far (Belly of the Beast, Perseverant, and Clash of Steel), and two of them have been quick, painless fulfillment processes. The third, Clash of Steel, is their first-ever delayed project but there are some very good reasons for this: most notably, the untimely death of one of the project’s collaborators.

Day 30: What is an RPG genre mash-up you’d most like to see?

Wuxia and fairy tales. 😉

Seriously though, I would love a PvP RPG inspired by the mecha vs. kaiju shenanigans of Pacific Rim. In fact, I can’t speak to the quality of the new movie but the premise looks to be right on the money:

When you’re not battling horrendous kaiju from beyond space and time, come back home and compete against each other in games of strategy and skill! What’s not to love?

Day 31: What do you anticipate most for gaming in 2018?

I’m tempted to say I’m most excited for the new editions of the Savage Worlds core rules, Fantasy Companion, and Horror Companion announced at GenCon this year. Seeing some of my favorite books in the new graphic novel format (with what looks to be new art) will be awesome. And that’s not even talking about my excitement for textual changes! I’ve heard there won’t be much that changes in the text, but at the very least I’m hoping for Quick Combat and Narrative Missions to show up in the core book.

Instead, I’m going to be a little selfish with this one. My book, The Blackwood Errantry Codex, will come out by November at the very latest. It’ll go out to 285 backers right before the holidays. I don’t know if anyone will get around to playing it before the new year, but I would love to see people’s impressions of the setting. It’s got a full Plot Point Campaign (27 adventures when you include Savage Tales), a bevvy of NPCs and magic items ready to go, and I’m working on a slew of maps to supplement gameplay. It’s primed and ready for gaming. What I most anticipate for gaming in 2018 is to see people playing my game and to hear what they have to say about it. It’s exciting and terrifying and I can’t wait!
