Day 1: What Published RPG do you wish you were playing right now?

What a question! There are a ton of RPGs I’d love to give a try, but lately there’s just one at the top.

I love Star Wars. It was my first fandom, and it’s still in the top 3. I’m not the most scholarly fan, but I love the movies and TV shows, I’ve read a handful of the new canon books, and I love scouring Wookiepedia (mostly for trivia about the Force and its various organizations). Remember when that news piece came out about the thousands of UK citizens who listed “Jedi” as their religion? After reading that several years ago, I schemer for weeks to see if I could move to the UK and do the same. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

If I had to choose just one RPG to play right now, it would be FFG Star Wars. Even though I love the Force, I admit I think I’d be more interested in playing Edge of the Empire specifically. Ever since Rogue One, I’ve been borderline obsessed with playing a gritty, “mundane” Star Wars campaign. Something populated entirely by scoundrels, gangsters, slavers, and the like. Here’s my pitch.

STAR WARS: REMNANTS

For some planets in the Outer Rim, the rest of the Galaxy is a far-away fantasy. These poor systems didn’t even notice when the Empire rose to power. Why should they notice when the Empire falls?

Cold open on a Wayfarer-Class Transport hurtling through space above Ylesia. It is pursued by one, then another, then an entire swarm of starfighters known as “uglies.” There’s a lot of good salvage and smuggling to be found in Hutt Space. Lots of clunky freighters trying to avoid the tariffs of whoever’s in charge out there now. Arok the Hutt and his gang of slavers know that better than anyone. They use strange beasts called T’landa Til to recruit slaves on the planet’s surface, but wayward freighters offer both slaves and contraband. Too good an opportunity to pass up.

What’s Stopping Me?

Honestly, I’ve been spoiled by Savage Worlds. $10 for a physical copy of the core rulebook and the PDF has just ruined my ability to fork over cash for a game. Edge of the Empire is $60 for a physical book without a PDF (I understand their limitations but…), and that’s just for 1/4 of the full setting! They’ve also got Force and Destiny, Age of Rebellion, and a new book, Dawn of Rebellion too. Right now, there’s a miser and a completionist warring for control of my willpower… and the miser is winning.

In other words: anybody got a copy and want to introduce a guy to the game?
